MailChimp has a decent API which is more complicated in practice than we expected for sure. That said though, integrating Google Data Studio with MailChimp and grabbing the most important stats (sends, opens, bounces, etc.) is pretty simple and a few connectors will do it for you. There are features and benefits of each so consider these things when choosing.
- Data Points: As we mentioned, the MailChimp API is a actually a series of about 4 APIs, each of which provides a different view of data. One focuses on campaign data, another on list data, a third on historical data, etc. Always good to trial a couple different connectors to see which easily provides the view you need.
- Roll-Up MailChimp Reporting: If your goal is to create a dashboard or dashboards which report from multiple MailChimp accounts (agency account or not), you’ll want to consider one of the MailChimp connectors which features data blending for sure. Otherwise, just about any connector listed will do.
- Direct Connection vs Data Warehousing: With some connectors, you connect directly to the MailChimp API in real time. This means that you’ll pull data from MailChimp each time your report loads. With others (typically paid connectors), the connector itself will warehouse your data. This is done sometimes to improve reporting features. In the case of MailChimp, the complication of the API is made simple by services like Power My Analytics who combine APIs to give you data you need in a more clear way.
Because the MailChimp API is a bit more complex than most other data sources, we recommend giving free trials with any of the mentioned services a try. Each is easy to connect and grab data so you’ll get a view of what each can do for you quickly.
